Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

  • still a few bugs - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This is my second Jeep. Traded in a 1999 GC limited in Nov 05. Have also driven long term/owned a Lexus 330 (wifes car), 2005 Durango (long term rental), an X5 4.4 , and 2002 Land Rover. Out of this group my $42K+ Jeep is the least refined and has the poorest build quality. Loose door handles and passenger door, wipers that turn on whenever, clunky drivetrain, tweeter shorted from factory, rough shifts. Other than these items the truck is unique in that it corners well, blows the doors off almost anything in its path and is impressively plush. Overall would not buy it again given the price tag and the quality issues. Service has been of very low caliber; nowhere near Lexus or BMW.

  • Electronic Problems - 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

3 Times to the dealer for electronic problems. Front windows would roll up and make a loud clunk, limit switch/motors needed to be replaced. Heated seat stopped working, dealer fixed by replacing part. Current problem is rear left taillight stops working intermittently. Car has low mileage and is not exposed to bad weather, anyone else having these problems?

  • cheap jeep - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

No a/c vents for rear passengers. No cup holders for rear passengers. No hand holder for passengers (roof grips) Rear end noise is so loud you can not hear the radio. Several mechanics have tried and can not lower the noise. Why do american car builders keep putting the fuse panels in such a difficult location........ Jeep leans to much in 30-45 mph turns.

  • Why the Problems Chrysler??? - 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Just hit the 30 day mark of ownership of my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. 5.7 v8 and heres what happened today: Engine Light, ABS Light, Brake Light, Airbag Light, Traction Control Light all suddenly came on! In addition, backup camera not functioning properly, cant open lift gate, and UConnect keeps cutting out completely! Took it to a Jeep Dealership (not where I purchased from, but it shouldnt matter, right!?) and their service shop was closed but they told me I could "rent" a vehicle...ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME!!! I am taking it to the service shop at 7:30 am tomorrow and by hell or high water will be getting a loaner, at no cost, and will be having it out with the service team.

  • Think before you buy one! - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have had my SRT8 for almost a year and it has been a year filled with visits to the dealership. The Jeep is a fun vehicle, but has proven to be less than reliable. The outright performance is amazing. The limited usefulness should be a consideration when looking at making a purchase. The low towing capacity (3500lbs) and small size make it more of a toy than a true SUV.

  • Poor Quality - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have had two electric window motors burn out. The cruise has gone out. All kinds of electrical problems. Its like a Jaguar without the charm and looks. Except Jaguars are reliable now. Jeep has produced the most defective piece of machinery running with this vehicle.

  • Second Time Around - 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Had a good 1996 Grand Cherokee i.e. 104,000 miles and second set of tires, just got first brakes, no repairs except cat. conv, why not a new one. Got a 2003. More space in rear compartment. Poorer driver vision on 2003. Lost storage space in front part of cab i.e. console and glove are smaller, also small door compartments. Main problem is that although engine has same displacement as 1996 the 2003 feels underpowered. Never had that problem with 1996. "Any" grade at speed makes the engine strain. Nickel and dime loses from 1996 i.e. no eng comp. light, poor cup holder position etc. In eng comp I found screws just lying around. Wonder where they belong?

  • MORE TROUBLE THAN ITS WORTH! - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Ive had nothing but trouble with rotors, and axle repairs. Jeep refuses to fix these problems and see them as defects. I have had rotors replace 2x and rear and front axle work!! It was a lemon from the get go and they didnt do anything. The first 2 rotor(both done at less than 12,000 miles!) repairs were covered under warranty along with the rear differential work. More recently i had new rotors(again!) and a front axle job!! Please save your money and buy something other than a gr cherokee!! Save yourself the time, money and stress!!

  • Do Not BUY - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

A reliability nightmare. Three fuel pumps have been replaced. Complete transmission overhaul @ 69,000K, heated seats do not work, brake problems, etc. etc. I should know better--had same problems on my 1999 which I just sold. Jeep can not build a reliable vehicle and Carmax is so busy because of all the needed repairs it takes two weeks to get an appointment so they can attempt repairs.

  • fly by wire - 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

It takes a special sort of person to drive a Jeep. If you drive it like a Toyota, you will probably hate it. If you have had Jeeps previously, you know the "when the weather gets ca-ca you pull your select/command trac lever". Not so in this. First time that all time 4WD is at the base model. *Even though the machine delivers top notch treacherous road handling ability, you will forget that its an all time, all wheel drive vehicle and still reach for the lever.* Electronic Gas Pedal is very fickle! It gets confused going up/dwn rolling hills, almost as if it doesnt know if its going up or down the hill, same thing when accelerating at speeds 25-40 mph, I.E. getting on highways from onramps.
